BRITISH BIATHLON UNION – TEAM SELECTION POLICY 2003 – 2004

 

 

  1. Until mid Nov 03 there are two male squads

 

a.       Senior Men

b.       Development & Juniors

 

  1. There are only two potential World Cup female athletes: Emma Fowler, who will initially train with the Development Squad, and Gillian Sowden who trains in USA. See Para 4c and 8.

 

  1. In mid Nov 03 joint selection races over a number of different distances will be held for the Senior Men in Scandinavia. These selection races will also be open to any British civilian (including those in the Development Squads) who thinks he has a chance of selection. Only the Senior Men’s squad will attract BBU financial support. The selection races will be organised by the Team Manager to a programme agreed by the Selection Committee.

 

  1. As result of these selection races the following teams will be selected which will remain the same (subject to injury) until Christmas:

 

a.                   World Cup (4 athletes)

b.                   European Cup (maximum 5 athletes)

c.                   Emma Fowler & Gillian Sowden will be invited to the races, with BBU financial support, and their form and fitness will determine their selection for either or neither the World or European Cup women’s team.

 

5.       Selection for the teams will be made on an overall “first past the post” scoring system based on the percentages behind the winner. However the Selection Committee will take into account any injuries, illness or other force majeure consequences before making their final selection for the teams.

 

6.       The composition of the teams will be reviewed at Christmas (after WC 3) and at the end of the British Championships. After the British Championships the size of the European Cup team may be increased with the addition of promising athletes. Outstanding juniors may be selected to join the European Cup junior team at any time during the season. Outstanding women may be selected to join the European Cup team.

 

7.       Race to race WC selection will be made by the Team Manager, on the basis of the 3rd placed athlete (WC) standing down for the next race to allow the 4th athlete to race.

 

8.       Selection for the World Championships male team will be dependant upon the athlete having achieved two separate (ie not in the same race) achievements of the following:

 

a.       As an individual: a result within 10% of the average of the top 3 of a World Cup field or finishing in the top half of the field.

b.       As a relay team: 3 of the 4 members of the team are to have achieved individual qualification.

 

8.       Selection for the World Championships Women’s team will be announced after the British Championships.

 

9.       Selection for all other International events (eg World Universiade) will be made by the Selection Committee. This will attract minimal, if any, BBU financial support.

 

10.   The BBU would expect to pay expenses for World and European Cups. It can give no guarantee of financial support for WC 7 & 8, the European Championships or the IBU Grand Prix.

 

11.   The Selection Committee consists of Eddy Lowe, Mark Goodson, and the Team Manager.
