13 Mar 04 - Gurnigel SUI - EC 7 MEN'S PURSUIT  Result

12 Mar 04 - Gurnigel SUI - HODGKINS HERALDS 700 DAYS TO TURIN WITH SEASON'S BEST

Lance Hodgkins celebrated the 700 days to Turin milestone by equalling the best EC result of the season in the Sprint at Gurnigel today. He shot 11 to finish in 24th place. Carl Carrier (13) was 27th with Simon Heard (41) in 30th. In the Junior race Stuart Paine (12) improved his ranking from EC 6, but Adele Turner could not repeat her good form of last week and finished 22nd (12).

11 Mar 04 -  GBR RETAIN WORLD TOP 20 SLOT

The final Men's Sprint of the season saw GBR finish the overall Nation Cup in 20th place. This gives the team 3 start places in each Men's World Cup race next season.

Norway with 4434 points were the winners ahead of Germany 4287 and then Russia. Ahead of GBR (1576) were SUI (1726) with CAN (1409) in 21st.

11 Mar 04 - Holmenkollen NOR - FINAL PURSUIT ELUDES GBR

Less than satisfying shooting today contributed to the failure of the GBR team to qualify for Saturday's Pursuit. All three male athletes missed 4 targets, whilst Emma Fowler had a difficult return to the World Cup scene, managing only a 50% hit rate. position.

10 Mar 04 - VACANCY FOR GBR COACH - CHECK THE JOB SPEC!

The BBU plans to appoint a coach for the period May 2004 - March 2006 (to include the Olympic Winter Games, Torino 2006) by May of this year.

This will be a part - time position suitable for a qualified National coach or a recently retired World Cup elite racer hoping to embark on a coaching career. The salary, for approximately 150 days per year, will be in the region of Euro 18000 - 22000, plus expenses.

10 Mar 04 - Holmenkollen NOR - EMMA RETURNS TO WORLD CUP

Emma Fowler makes her return to the World Cup team in the Sprint tomorrow, starting 20th. This is live on British Eurosport at 0945 GMT. The Men's race is also live at 1245 GMT and the GBR team is Jason Sklenar 19th, Marc Walker 61st and Joe Brooks 70th of 99 starters. These could be the last races of the season, unless the athletes qualify for the Pursuits on Sat 13 Mar.

10 Mar 04 - WORLD CUP QUALIFIER FOR ADELE TURNER

In her last but race of the season, Adele Turner shot 01 to gain a World Cup Qualifying position.  Results

Adele will also race in EC 7 at Gurnigel SUI, in the Sprint on Thu 11 Mar. Also competing are Carl Carrier, Lance Hodgkins and Stuart Paine. Simon Heard may not race due to a trapped nerve.

Please note that all our outgoing Emails are scanned for know viruses. However you (like us) may have received Emails purporting to be from the BBU with strange looking subject matter, attachments or downloads. These are part of the latest severe virus Netsky or Beagle and are sent from a 3rd party that picks up our Email address from their address book. Never open any so called attachments or download from these dodgy looking Emails. Especially never open anything (allegedly from the BBU or elsewhere) stating "here are the details / pictures you requested" or a so called sports or updated database  We never send such databases or attachments.

In particular anything from "support / webmaster / no reply / management @britishbiathlon.com / .co (etc)" (or similar)  should be regarded as a dangerous virus and /or hoax and be deleted.

04 Mar 04 - Fort Kent ME USA - GBR CONSOLIDATE NATIONS' CUP POSITION

Another small field in today's sprint allowed GBR to score 212 Nations Cup points and consolidate their place the Top 20.  Only Jason Sklenar, who finished 55th with his best result of the season,  qualified for tomorrow's Pursuit  Results   Nations Cup

04 Mar 04 - ACTION ON THE ARBER

A familiar venue to British biathletes and Cross Country skiers returns to the European Cup circuit this weekend. The Arber (better, if partially incorrectly known as Zwiesel) hosts EC 6.

Carl Carrier, Lance Hodgkins, Emma Fowler and Adele Turner return to the EC circuit, whilst Simon Heard and Stuart Paine make their GBR debuts.

Two recent constructive articles have shown the BBU and the Army's involvement in biathlon is a positive if financially strapped light. See The Observer of 1 Feb and Soldier Magazine Mar 04.


27 Feb 04 - Lake Placid NY USA - SKLENAR & WALKER SQUEEZE INTO US PURSUIT

Jason Sklenar (01) finished 55th and Marc Walker (22) was 59th in the Lake Placid Sprint today. Both made the cut for Sunday's Pursuit. Joe Brooks (03) was 65th.  British Eurosport is not scheduled to show this race until midnight GMT on Sunday!

The relatively small field in today's race allowed GBR to gain record Nations Cup points for the season and move back into the Top 20.  Results   Nations Cup


26 Feb 04 - CARRIER MIXES IT IN MINSK

A very tired Carl Carrier has returned to rest in Ruhpolding following 3 very severe races at the European Championships in Minsk BLR. As a licensed athlete Carl had to make all his own travel arrangements for the journey and an experience that was somewhat different to that of 12 months ago when he was iroller skiing around an airfield near Iraq!

13 Feb 04 - RELAY GOLD FOR GERMANY!

A brave selection policy paid off for the German Men's relay team who defended their World Title in terrific style. Frank Luck signed off after 16 years at the top of biathlon with a 00 shoot, the same as Ricco Gross, Sven Fischer and Michael Greis. There was hardly a dry eye in the 25000 crowd at Oberhof!

13 Feb 04 - RELAY REALLY SAYS IT ALL FOR GBR

The World Champs ended as they began for GBR in disappointment. Marc Walker's shooting skills deserted him on the first leg of the relay and a Chinese athlete fell badly in front of Tom Clemens causing them both to withdraw through injury. Results

12 Feb 04 - GBR SEASON'S BEST FOR MARC WALKER

Marc Walker recorded his best result of the season, and the best for GBR, when finishing 51st in the 20 km World Champs Individual today in Oberhof. This would be an Olympic Qualifying Standard next season. His percentage of 11.87 was also the best this winter. Results   Nations Cup

08 Feb 04 - DISAPPOINTING START TO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The results from the World Championships Sprint in Oberhof yesterday were less than satisfying for GBR  Results

GBR now lie in 21st place in the Nations' Cup

08 Feb 04 - BBU CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

Simon Heard the National 15 km XC Champion may not have won any biathlon races, but he finished the week as BBU Club Champion. (This event is not open to current or recent GBR team athletes).  Stuart Paine was the easy Junior winner and Simon Allanson took the Youth award. Details of Kelly Hanniver's women's victory and the other categories will be published in a few days.


04 Feb 04 - GEE TO RACE IN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Triple Olympian Mark Gee 2 RTR, who retired from International racing at the end of last season, has been on such good form at the British Championships that he has been recalled to the GBR team for the World Championships beginning in Oberhof GER on Sat 7 Feb. The rest of the team is: Jason Sklenar (Captain) 28 Engr Regt, Tom Clemens 1 D & D, Lee Jackson 1 Green Howards and Marc Walker 1 GS Regt RLC.

Team Manager is Carl Evans 2 RTR and Wax Technician  Claude Prica FRA. Joe Brooks 45 Cdo RM is being rested until the final three World Cups and is scheduled to replace Lee Jackson.


04 Feb 04 - EUROPEAN CUP TEAM SELECTED

Carl Carrier (Team Captain), Lance Hodgkins, Simon Heard, Stephen Hope,, Stuart Paine, Emma Fowler and Adele Turner have been licensed for the EC team until the end of the season. "Licensed" means they race at their own expense - will you sponsor them?


03 Feb 04 - BOARD MEMBERS RE-ELECTED

The 7th AGM of the BBU was held in Ruhpolding on Sat 31 Jan. BBU President Lord Moynihan and Chairman David Cranston were the principal speakers. Eddy Lowe (49 votes) and Mark Goodson (48) were both re-elected for a 3 year term. Full Minutes will be published here shortly

13 years after last being crowned overall Army Ski Champions, 28 Engr Regt won the Princess Marina Cup by 2 points from 1 GS Regt RLC  Marina

1 GS Regt RLC won both the SAS Cup (Champion Inter Service Unit Team) and Kentish Cup (Army Nordic Champions).  SAS  Kentish

06 Feb 04 - PATROL WIN FOR HIGHLANDERS

1 Highlanders won the 30 km Miliatry Patrol Race by just 22 seconsds from 8 Tpt Regt RLC. RLC Ladies won the Ladies 20 km race by 10 minutes. Results

03 Feb 04 - 1GS NARROW MARINA GAP

1 GS Regt RLC won the 4 x 7.5 km Biathlon Relay to narrow the gap in the Marina to just 4 points behind 28 Engr Regt.  Marina. 38 teams started the Men's race and 9 the Women's. Definitely a record European, if not World sized field! Results

Scott Baines and Barry Hamilton of the Highlanders won the BBU Team Challenge ahead of surprise runners up from 2 LI, Scott McMillan and Chris Mothersole. 3rd were Mark Bartlett and James Allen from 1 D&D. Results

01 Feb 04 - "FRED" WINS INAUGURAL MASS START

Mark "Fred" Gee won the first ever British National Senior Mass Start today ahead of Tom Clemens and Marc Walker. Emma Fowler and Stuart Paine continued their winning streaks. Results

31 Jan 04 - CLEMENS SPRINTS HOME BY A WHISKER

Tom Clemens 1 D & D pipped Marc Walker 1 GS Regt RLC by one tenth of a second to win the 10 km Sprint today. 1 GS Regt RLC won the team race ahead of 28 Engr Regt, who still lead the Marina. Results

29  Jan 04 - MARK GEE RETAINS 20 KM TITLE

An almost perfect shoot of 0001 allowed Mark Gee of 2 RTR to retain his British National 20 km Individual Biathlon title. Jason Sklenar was 2nd and Lance Hodgkins 3rd. Results

26  Jan 04 - TA SOLDIER TRIUMPHS IN 15 KM XC

Simon Heard a TA soldier with the Rifle Volunteers was the surprise winner of the British 15 km Cross Country race on Sunday. He beat South African Oliver Kraas and Lance Hodgkins of 40 Regt RA who became the Regular Army Champion. Results

26  Jan 04 - ARMY CHAMPIONS MAINTAIN XC PROFILE

Reigning Army Nordic Champions, 22 Regt RA won the 15 km XC team race yesterday. The Army won the Inter Service race. Ladies Champion was former World Cup biathlete Emma Fowler. Results

24 Jan 04 - BRITISH CHAMPS OPEN IN RUHPOLDING

17,000 spectators packed into Ruhpolding for the World Cup last week, which was just 16,750 more than we have in town this week for the British Championships. These started today in perfect, if cold conditions, with four exciting Cross Country Pursuits. Results

23 Dec 03 - BEST WISHES TO HOPPY IN HOSPITAL

Many competitors at the British Championships will know the Australian "legend" Hoppy Hopkins. Sadly he is been undergoing chemo treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukaemia since 15 Dec. As enthusiastic as ever, he wishes all British biathletes the compliments of the season and has every intention of being back with the full ADF team for Rucksack 2005. We all send him are very best wishes for a successful recovery.

Marc Walker missed just one target to record his best ever 20 km result, albeit Tom Clemens continued his fine skiing form with the fastest ski time in the Individaul race at Osrblie today. GBR stay in 19th spot in the Nations' Cup

Over 180 athletes descended upon the sparse snow in Ridnaun for the second European Cupof the season. GBR failed to qualify for the men's pursuit, although both women did.

13 Dec 03 - Hochfilzen AUT RELAY SET BACK IN SOGGY SNOW

The GBR relay team had an off day in the office, in spite of an excellent run by Tom Clemens, who was brought into the team due to illness of Jason Sklenar. The snow was reminiscent of Scotland, and just survived the earlier rain.

The Organising Committee has done a marvellous job to prepare tracks with snow from the glaciers, although a few athletes will wish they hadn't!

6 Dec 03 - Kontiolahti FIN  -  SKLENAR STARS IN STORM

After the first shoot in the Men's Relay GBR was lying in 3rd place after a superb effort in stormy conditions by Jason Sklenar. After the second shoot he was 10th and finished his leg in 14th place. Germany won the race and, in spite of a 00 shoot by Joe Brooks, GBR eventually came 18th. However, for several minutes it was a unique and very pleasant experience to see the TV caption "GER - FIN - GBR".

Jason Sklenar was the leading GBR athlete in the inaugural race of the new season. Unfortunately his 13.77% was not enough to make the Pursuit on Sun 07 Dec. Results:   Sprint
