Bob Lacy – Royal Air Force

It is with deep regret that we announce that Sergeant Robin (Bob) Lacy, Royal Air Force, died on Saturday 15 May as a result of a motor-bike accident in the West of Scotland.

Bob had been a leading member of the Royal Air Force Biathlon and Cross Country Ski teams for many years.  He had recently been selected for promotion and was shortly to be married. He was a dedicated athlete and coach and an inspirational leader of a very talented group of GBR Development and youth Cross Country Skiers.

He will be sorely missed by his many friends and colleagues in all three Services and in the wider world of Biathlon and Cross Country skiing. We extend our deepest sympathy to his family and fiancée Angharad.

01 May 04 - ED NICOLL APPOINTED NATIONAL TEAM COACH

We are delighted to announce the appointment, effective today, of Ed Nicoll as the GBR National Team Coach.

Ed is 39 and was a member of the GBR Biathlon World Cup Team from 1986 - 1990 and an Olympian at Calgary 1988.  From 1990 - 1994 he was a regular member of the GBR XC team, and raced in the 1991 World Championships. A multi talented sportsman, Ed also competed for GBR in the World Mountain Bike Championships (1991) and the World Duathlon Championships (2001).

After leaving the Army in 1996, where he was in the six times victorious Princess Marina winning team from 35 Engr Regt, he spent 2 years as the National Team Manager for Mountain Biking. He has recently completed 4 years as an Operations Manager with David Lloyd Racquet and Fitness Clubs and holds a number of sports and coaching qualifications.

Although Ed now lives near Autrans in France, the National teams will continue to focus their summer training on Ruhpolding. Ed is contracted for the next two seasons, albeit finances only allow for this to be on a part-time basis. His initial task is to ensure that the World Cup Team retain their Top 20 slot next season. However, there are now just 15 WC events left for Olympic Qualifying before Turin 2006 and that will be the ultimate hurdle for Ed and the Team.

Welcome to the BBU!

01 May 04 - SKI MAESTRO MARTIN GLAGOW RETURNS

To complement the arrival of the new Team Coach, we are thrilled to announce that Martin Glagow, our waxman and ski technician from 2001 -2003, will return to the GBR team for the next 2 seasons. Martin is a true "wizard with wax" whilst his daughter Martina is a star of the German Team and was the overall World Cup Champion in 2002 - 2003.

Welcome Back!

01 May 04 - WORLD & EUROPEAN CUP PROGRAMME 2004 - 05

The outline programmes for the 2004 -05 World Cup and European Cup have been published. In an unusual move the first two races in both Cups will be held in Norway, and the WC circuit will not move to Central Europe until after Christmas.

01 May 04 - BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS 2005

Click to see the outline programme for the British Championships 2005.  For the 8th successive year the venue will be in Ruhpolding GER. Cross Country 22 - 25 Jan; Biathlon 27 Jan - 1 Feb. It is possible that the new IBU Supersprint will replace the BBU Team Challenge.

01 May 04 - NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT COURSES

The first Course for the National Development Squad (NDS) will be held at the East Grange Biathlon Centre from 7 - 18 Jun 04. Joining instructions will be sent out this week to all the athletes (and to the 2iC of their Units) listed on the GBR Teams page. Follow up courses will be held 3 - 13 Sep and on a glacier in October.

Any athlete who has not received the instruction by 10 May should Email the BBU Office.

01 May 04 - NATIONAL SQUAD TRAINING

Strictly speaking there is no GBR "Team" at present, as until final selection is made in Nov 04 it is a "Squad"! However most of the experienced athletes who were in the WC & EC "Teams" last season are currently on a warm weather camp in Cyprus. They then attend a shooting course at Bisley and move to Ruhpolding in mid May. Selection Policy will be published at the end of May.

01 May 04 - TICKETS FOR TURIN

The XX Olympic Winter Games will be held in Turin 10 - 26 Feb 06. From 4 Nov 2004, one million tickets will be available for the public; half of them will cost 50 Euro or less. The BBU can not yet advise on ticketing, travel or accommodation.
